Actually, my first assignment in Andara would have been planned for summer and autumn 2020, but Corona thwarted our plans and I couldn’t fly to Namibia. The first container, which we loaded in Belp and sent on a journey in February 2020, arrived safely and undamaged in Andara and many supplies could be unloaded and distributed.
Due to Covid-19, Barbara Müller and the team in Andara have been concentrating more on community projects in the last few months since doctors were not allowed to enter Namibia.
There was a lot of construction and diligent planning, kindergartens, water pipes laid and solar panels installed. We are pleasantly surprised how the churches stuck together in these times and helped where help was urgently needed.
In Shaditata and Shamunaro, two kindergartens were built during this time, everyone tackled and the children were allowed to paint the walls themselves at the end.
Thank you very much to the sponsors for the new kindergartens, you enable a future for many children. Dr. Matthias Rohwer who finances a kindergarten in Shutu, Anja Kukofka who supports her second kindergarten in Shamangorwa through MYSAYANG and Charline Catteeuw who gives a lot of children a lot of joy in Rupetho.
We look forward to these projects and will keep everyone informed.
In November 2020 I was on my 2nd assignment for MUDIRO in northern Namibia and was able to gain many impressions and experiences.
During the 3 weeks I was in two hospitals in Andara and Nyangana to treat patients there and to give training for nurses and doctors. I used the outreach vehicle and my own vehicle to visit and treat patients at their homes because they could not come to the Andara Hospital themselves. Seeing the local people in their homes gave me an even deeper insight into everyday life than would have been possible through working in the hospital alone. Understanding what is missing and what exactly the everyday difficulties are, went far beyond purely psychiatric treatment. It was not always possible to find a helpful way, because of things that are small things for us in the western world, such as the availability of suitable medication or the possibility of the patients being able to come to the hospital because they do not have a car, nor the money to be able to afford the transport.
Our container from Switzerland has arrived in Andara, a few weeks ago and has been placed next to the container village in the garden.
Due to COVID, Barbara Müller cannot distribute most of the things. The idea was to distribute these together with doctors. We will wait and hope that we can bring Swiss doctors to Namibia as soon as possible.
Enviro Loo is a solution to install toilets without access to water, environmentally friendly.
In Namibia, this system is a perfect solution for schools, campsites, and mines. So how exactly does it work?
The Enviro Loo is an established, internationally awarded, patented, proven water-friendly sanitary solution. The main principle of the Enviro Loo is the separation of waste: evaporation of the urine and drainage of the solid waste.
Now that the corona pandemic has reached southern Africa, the CCC-19 aid program has been launched to provide immediate help to people in Namibia who are particularly affected by the global crisis and its effects.
Under the patronage of the Swiss Consulate General in Windhoek, represented by Mr. Urs Peter Gamma, the project “Consulate Cooperation Covid-19” (CCC-19) was launched. With this project, all consulates, companies, and individuals were asked to help us so that we can help.
In the fourth quarter of 2019, many relief supplies such as clothes, blankets, medical supplies, medical equipment, tools, toys, and other equipment and aids were collected in Belp for the people and the district hospitals in the north of Namibia. The volume revealed the need for transport in a 20-foot sea container. We bought it with the intention of setting up a workshop in Andara for the maintenance and repair of medical equipment and as a storage location for spare parts and auxiliary equipment.
After a beautiful and exciting camper trip through the north of Namibia with my children (daughter 30, son 27) we are back in Windhoek. The children leave and for me, a new adventure begins. I am very much looking forward to it. First, we take the plane from Windhoek to Rundu in the north of Namibia. From now on, thunderstorms and downpours accompany us. At least in the north, it has rained after four years of drought, to the delight of nature and the population, which is one of the poorest in the world.
The aid supplies to Namibia are packed and waiting for transport. The offers have been collected. We launch the crowdfunding. For over a year now, we have been receiving clothes, blankets, toys, small medical supplies, medical equipment and tools for the people and the district hospitals from all sides. From the heart a great MERCI to all donors!
