Mudiro helps with the Covid-19 Aid Program in Namibia.

Now that the corona pandemic has reached southern Africa, the CCC-19 aid program has been launched to provide immediate help to people in Namibia who are particularly affected by the global crisis and its effects.

Under the patronage of the Swiss Consulate General in Windhoek, represented by Mr. Urs Peter Gamma, the project “Consulate Cooperation Covid-19” (CCC-19) was launched. With this project, all consulates, companies, and individuals were asked to help us so that we can help.

Namibia has been hit in a serious way, which has a major impact especially on the poorer people in the country. Many people are at serious risk of developing Covid-19 due to previous illnesses such as HIV or tuberculosis.

In Africa, it is not the virus but the lockdown that is likely to cause the most deaths, as the malaria expert Christian Lengeler explains in an interview with the NZZ *) “We used mathematical models to calculate what could happen, if the planned campaigns for mosquito nets in Africa, as a preventive measure against malaria will not be carried out this year. Or if the options for treating severe malaria cases are reduced by 50 percent, which is a realistic scenario. We put these people in the foreground in this aid program, because it will take a few months until certain normality develops again.”

Due to the corona pandemic, the lodges have closed down and tourism in Namibia came to a complete standstill. A great number of companies have had to lay off numerous employees, which means that many families have no income at all. All traditional markets have not been open for weeks. The people who earn their daily wages from their work are particularly affected and have no way of supporting their families.

Emergency Care Program

We have planned an emergency care program for these people with about 1000 to 1200 households, which we will support weekly for the next four months.

Each of these families will receive an emergency food supply every week. All households are listed and are statistically recorded for documentation for all donors.

In addition, an emergency supply kitchen for mothers and their children will be set up in a training center on the premises of the Rundu Hospital. This care for sixty people is planned for four months. Mothers who can no longer feed their children are given a meal here twice a day.
